Ordinance is one of my favorite cover terms for firearms and the killing devices they use.

Not to be confused with ordnance, which describes ammunition, explosive devices and similar items.

Ordinance may refer to:

* A local ordinance, a law made by a municipality or other local authority.
* A law or decree made by any authority or authoritative body:
o In some countries, including India, France (ordonnance), Switzerland and Germany (Verordnung), a regulation adopted by the executive in a domain normally reserved for statute law.
o Imperial ordinance, an order issued by an emperor.
o Ordinance (university), class of internal legislation in a United Kingdom university.
* That which is ordained or decreed by destiny or by a deity.

Ordnance, not to be confused with ordinance, may refer to:

Military:

* Weapon
* Ammunition
* Ordnance disposal, the process by which hazardous devices are rendered safe
* Para-Ordnance, a firearms manufacturer located in Toronto, Canada
* Unexploded ordnance, are explosive weapons that did not explode when they were employed, and still pose a risk of detonation

 In a longer work, you can illustrate it more, but in short fiction such quibbling is likely to castrate your action sequences.

-  Ahh, yes, and therein lies the author's challenge: to educate without preaching or dissertating, to be 'real' without having to lecture.

In the UK, the term "ordnance", when applied to guns, means BIG guns - like artillery. The kind of rifles, pistols and MGs which soldiers carry are known as "small arms".
