Is it possible to get Fictionwise to list a single book? I've just completed work on a horror anthology including some authors who post here. There's some great stories in it but don't know if Fictionwise would take anything from a non-publisher individual. Anyone have any clues?

Sorry, but I know less about Fictionwise than he does! Where's Janrae, anyway? She's gotta know the answer to this one...

They sell ebooks. I'm asking because I've compiled a western themed horror anthology (Hell's Hangmen: Horror in the Old West) and was hoping that fictionwise might net the contributors some additional royalties. I'll be printing it through Lulu.com but am looking for other venues in which to market it. The book has stories by some very talented writers such as Shrewsbury, Santa, Zumpe, Lawrence Barker and others.

Cool Ron, I need a copy. I saw it listed on ralan's, I think, but didn't have anything in that vein ready for pub. Good luck with it.
Why not ask at fictionwise?

Fictionwise requires that publishers have ten books out before they will consider you legitimate and include your products. They use this to keep out the self-published bottomfeeders who give self-publishing such a bad name.

The books must be well edited, clean of typos and grammatical errors.

I think my book might meet those requirements but I certainly understand their reason for doing things in that manner. I know they sell several books published by G.W. Thomas and I know that the quality of my manuscript is as well edited as some of the ones from Rage Machine and perhaps better than a couple of them. I don't mean this in any way as a slap at those books, just that I feel mine is of equal quality.

As for POD, it's really a process more than anything else. It's the dreck put out through this process that has given it a bad name in the minds of many. I really need to put back some cash and attempt to publish a project in the traditional manner but alas do not have the money at present. Oh well, maybe the release of my project will be met with praise. But then again, perhaps I'm self-deluded and can't see its flaws. smilewinkgrin

Ron,

Sorry for taking forever to reply.

Fictionwise doesn't take just any books. They expect a large number from book providers. I do 4-6 a week. That may be on the high side but they want to see more than one. If you have a single book, then submit it to a publisher such as my RAGE m a c h i n e Books or others (and there are some good ones out there, not everybody is dreck). The publisher can then decide if they want to do an ebook version, POD, what have you.

I am repeating some of what I said earlier because everyone except for GW seems to have missed this part, but fictionwise doesn't even consider you a legitimate publishing company until you have ten books out. They only carry books from companies (not individuals) who meet that criteria.

Thanks for the info! Oh, I didn't mean to imply that all the POD stuff was dreck. I just meant that it's the dreck that has hurt the reputation of POD as a whole. I'm going to release the book through Lulu in the next couple of weeks and hope that word of mouth will result in some sales. And again, my comment about Rage Machine books wasn't meant as a negative and I hope no one took it that way. I'm in Travel a Time Historic and Goremet Cuisine and am happy to be published through Rage Machine.

Ron,

Fictionwise is expecting big sales I think. I was with them for a quarter then they dropped me. I guess $2500 in sales wasn't enough.

Fictionwise has been doing a major upgrade that took up most of the past month. They are also re-evaluating what they carry to make the most of their space.

It's nice to know you made such a large amount of money, GW. I'm certain that your contributors will be pleased.

Well, that sucks. I would've thought Rage Machine books would be a good fit for them. Sorry to hear about that. Makes me wonder just what they ARE looking for.

Do the books have to be completely yours or can you get printed in other things like anthologies with several other authors?

After I read this about GW's fictionwise problems, I contacted some of the other ebook publishers I know as well as doing some research at Publisher's Weekly online. My first impression was that $2500 per quarter is a lot of money. I was startled to discover that the major ebook companies tend to make over $13k per quarter. That's a huge difference. There is money to be made in ebook publishing. However, the trick seems to be in making it and reaching the audience.
