Why doesn't MSWord hold its formatting when I cut and paste (from one .doc file to another)? This has always frustrated me to no end. Some of the lines will be indented extra spaces (.5 instead of .2 how I like them), some of the fonts will come up a different size, sometimes a paragraph will be in bold type when it shouldn't, etc. Just weird stuff. Anybody have any answers? Should I save documents as rich text when I want to cut and paste? Would that help?

Make sure your text Style (the drop-down box on the far left of your tool bar) throughout the document is "Normal." If you have other styles mixed in, such as Body Text, for example, this will cause funky things to happen when you cut and paste.
I've had this happen when using cut and paste from older Word documents to newer versions. I have no idea how the text styles get all mixed up in one document (probably from even older upgrades to later versions of Word), but it does happen. You can Select All and then choose Normal from the drop-down menu, but be aware that you may lose some formatting that will then have to be fixed before you cut and paste. I have found that once the entire document is coded Normal, the cut and paste problems are fixed.
Maybe someone else will come along with a better solution, but that's all I know to do.

I have the same problem with Word Perfect documents. What I have found is that I can open a window along the bottom which shows me all of the formatting codes. Then I have to manually go through and remove the codes that are causing the problem.

Try
  1. Edit, Paste Special
  2. Select "Unformatted Text"

This loses all the formatting in the section you're pasting.

That's why it was so damn hard to learn MS Word - there is no "show codes." In Word, you just plaster code after code onto the text.

Use "Format Painter": paste all your stuff in, then pick the para that looks best. Place the cursor in it and double-click the little yellow paintbrush icon. Then click in each paragraph. If the font size of the word changes, click in the margin to the left.

All the codes in a para are linked to the paragraph mark at the end (click on Show/Hide [para mark] to see the mark). For really stubborn stains, er, codes, you can drag the cursor to select everything BUT the last period of the para, then copy (CTRL + c) and paste.

"Clear Formatting" under Style works but it also removes all your italics.

I'm an editor and I used all these tricks to clean up a totally insanely formatted manuscript from France. Didn't help with the Frenglish but at least it looked better.

Good luck.
