I read this story a very long time ago (I was in 7th grade then and I'm 47 now which should give you a clue as to how long it's been)!  It was the adventures of a crippled man from Earth who was recruited to serve on a ship as part of an armada that was hoping to repel an attack on our galaxy by what I remember to be some form of mice people.  Once on board the ship his handicap was corrected and his crew consisted of beings from different races.  The ship was operated through mental control.

If my memory serves, that ship was not intended to go into battle; however since the crew's individual planets were threatened they were there to represent their respective worlds in the conflict.  Somehow things developed where the ship and her crew became involved in the direct battle.

Have been racking my brain trying to remember who wrote it and the title by which it was called.

I was hoping that someone here might remember it (provided I recalled the details correctly).

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Sincerely,

Chuck

Whew! That's a tough one. I don't recall any book with an alien mouse invasion.

Thanks for the reply.  I know it is a challenge.  Just don't know how much is flawed memory about the story particulars.

I have been racking my brain trying to verify the memory, but cannot come up with anything different.  The mouse/rodent angle was the thing that stuck with me, so I'm pretty sure that it's legitimate.  Hope this is not some wild goose chase.

Well, thanks again for getting back to me.  If I come up with it I'll fire off a response to fill you in.

Only things crossing my mind are the CJ Cherryh "Chanur" books, which have giant rodent types and "The Mouse that roared" which has a mouse only in the title. I can't think of any stories about handicapped or crippled folks being recruited to run an army.

I previously said: I'm thinking David Gerrold, _Voyage of the Star Wolf_. Don't remember mice, but the rest sounds like it would fit.

But -- rassle-frak! -- I just pulled the book down and that ain't it. VotSW has "Morthans" as the villains, genetically engineered more-than humans who look more like Kzinti. The book you're looking for, however, I'm pretty sure has a similar title -- Wolf something, something Wolf. I just can't seem to find that particular one among the piles and shelves of books we have all over our house.

Thanks for the effort. I'm still trying to force my brain to remember, but it's like trying to put hardened concrete through a sifter.
