A definite must-see. 

 

Now I haven't kept up with Iron Man for decades, but the movie seemed to keep to the storyline I remember pretty well--although updated from lace>Viet Namlace> era technology.  All the major characters seem well fleshed out.  The story hits the ground running and really never quits.  Scenes of technological development are a whole story in themselves.  Scenes of human degradation and oppression are one of the backgrounds and the movie really pulls no punches when killing off baddies. 

 

Good characters, story, banter, and some killer special effects scenes.  All I can complain about is wishing it were longer.

I agree. What perfect casting. Even though the movie was over two hours long the time flew by. There were some really nice easter eggs in the film, too. That's the great thing about Marvel having its own production company now. Look for crossovers, like the upcoming Hulk movie where Robert Downey Jr. (as Tony Stark) has a cameo.

I hope you guys stayed through the credits to see the little scene at the end.

Overall, it was well-cast and well done. I thought the first half was better and more compelling than the second half; the titanic battle between two iron men was just not all that interesting to me. Thank goodness they didn't drag it out too long.

One of my sons tells me that they had two different script writers -- one who wrote the first half and one who wrote the second -- and then they merged the stories. If true, that explains the shift.

Very, very disappointing that they didn't work the Ironman song from Black Sabbath into the soundtrack. It appeared briefly as the credits started to roll, and that's it. I wonder if they had trouble getting permission to use it.

Oh, man. I cringed just hearing that song in the commercials. You want it in the soundtrack???

Ugh, if they keep up this course, the next Hulk movie will be promoted using "The Flying Purple People Eater" on account of his flying leaps and trademark purple pants. Then "Troglodyte (Cave Man)" for Ka-Zar. Maybe "Under the Sea" for Namor... (I should stop now; I'm just giving them ideas.)

Favreau is better known as an actor's director as opposed to an action director, which explains the strength of the acting and dialog in lieu of the fight scene. As much as I like Black Sabbath's trademark tune (I grew up in that era), I have to admit I'm glad they saved it for the credits.

I enjoyed the film, and it's better than the recent run of Marvel adaptations (I didn't like either Fantastic Four film, was disappointed with Spider-Man 3, and would like to forget that Ghost Rider ever happened). I read Iron Man in junior high and high school, during the Obadiah Stane era—I very vividly remember issue #200 when Iron Man went up against Iron Monger in the culmination of a long arc involving Stark's surrender to alcoholism and loss of the company. Good seeing on screen, even if the ending wasn't nearly as interesting as the earlier sections in Afghanistan. Downey was great, Bridges good, Paltrow so-so… she's not anybody I could ever see getting nicknamed "Pepper." No Mandarin, but possibly a later movie since we got enough hints about him. I would like to see Crimson Dynamo, but he would need some significant re-imagining to make him fit into contemporary politics; same with Titanium Man.

I blathered on more about the movie at my recent blog entry, plus some Iron Man history. Thanks to the "Essentials" series, I was able to read the first couple years of Iron Man comics from the sixties—really great, wild times, the Silver Age!

I was very surprised by how good the film once - I never looked at my watch to see how much time was left...

and darn it... I may become a Robert Downey Jr. fan...

although Pepper Potts did have some GREAT lines...

Just saw it for the second time today. Liked it even better. Anyone catch the brief glimpse of Captain America's shield on a workbench behind Stark when he's trying to have his armour removed after the run in with the 2 jets? Nice easter egg.

-  It was just as good the second time around.  You see more of the lavish detail they scrunched into it.  I only caught that the Director was playing 'Happy' on the second time.  I only remember that poor old 'Hap' got stompped in numerous episodes trying to protect Tony.  (Of course that was from nearly 40 years ago.)
