Another season of the perfect game starts today.
You know, one of the few things I ever wrote that was quoted back to me was "The only reason that baseball is not more important than life itself is that baseball already is life itself."
Sigh. Dogs with cheese and kraut, peanuts in the shell, and over-priced warm beer. The smell of fresh-cut grass, the sun on my cheeks, and the perfect intellectual joy of the infield shift.

Ah yes, the Game is again on the field.
Now if we could only convince them to get rid of artifical turf, the designated hitter, and raise the mound back up 2", everything would be right with the world.
But them's heaven's rules now.

The Braves tie it up after 2 outs in the 9th and 20,000 FREEZING fans go "oh, nooooo" - then Zimmerman pings it, the Nats win, and we can all go home. You only get an ending like that in F&SF and baseball.

But lord, I wish we could get kraut in DC...

Keralen: That Zimmerman HR helped out my fantasy team, too, so I was whooping it up in the warmth of my living room (and with some Belgian beer in my belly).

No kraut in D.C.? That's sad.

Yeah, and $7.50 Bud Lite. But you can see the Capitol from our seats.

$7.50 for Bud Lite? I wouldn't pay $7.50 for a CASE of Bud Light.

Usually, when I go to the ballpark I try to have a beer or two (or three) before the game, rather than pay such prices. If pregame imbibing isn't feasible, I content myself with having my beer after the game.

As I watched the Nats on TV, I was drinking Grimburgen -- a not-too-exspensive Belgian beer my wife nabbed at the grocery. It's pretty yummy, especially for the price. So, while I missed out on being in the park (Nice ballpark, by the way!), I console myself with knowing I got the better end of things on the beer side.

Do you have season tickets?

Mariners new ace pitches a little flat, but the bats pull it out late in the game. Top of the AL West, 1.000 W/L --- only downhill from here :)

Miachael, Ellie: Do you play fantasy baseball? Or does anyone else here play? It's too late to set up an SFReader League for this season, but if there is sufficient interest we could get one up for next season.

There are numerous free online sites that track stats and stuff, and we could set up a fairly low-maintenance league or a high-maintenance league, depending on what those playing want to do. To me, playing fantasy baseball adds a lot of interest throughout the season.

Anyone else here interested in something like that?
