British troops withdrawing from Northern Ireland

There was a time no one--or nearly no one--would have thought this happening without a lot of bloodshed.

Thanks for the link! Question is: will the N. Irish be happy without a romantic "cause" to fight for? LOL

I've tried to avoid political threads as people seem to get quite passionate about stuff.  All I will say is that this "War on Terror" ended because one British Prime Minister (John Major) actually had the nerve to turn around and ask the IRA's political wing (Sinn Fein) what it was they wanted - and they began working towards a solution.

It is part of the reason why I am so surprised that Tony Blair was so eager to wade into Iraq.  Did he learn nothing from our own bloody history of dealing with terrorism?  For him to stand up and declare that we don't negotiate with terrorists - er, well actually Tony, we do, and we did - and it all ended well, or at least better than it was.

I could go on, but I fear I will put a few noses out of joint and I don't want to do that.  I'm glad the NI thing is coming to an end.  I was looking forward to London being a safe place again.  Fat chance of that now.
