Too bad, so sad....

TB rejected Troder, which went on to win 3rd in Writers of the Future
TB rejected Chopper, which went on to be published in Vampire Dan's Story Emporium
TB rejected This is Jimmy Dale which went on to be published in the eAntho from Ideomancer
TB rejected From the Mouths of Birds, which went on to win the Chiaroscuro Story Contest
TB rejected Paper Children which went on to be published in Flesh and Blood

Basically TB rejected every story I ever sent them. I suppose I should thank them; between the Wotf and Chiaroscuro wins, I made over $2k for 2 stories, as much as some newbies get for their first book!

Maybe if they'd had a better eye for talent (Dan not included of course) they wouldn't be going away!

LOL

I could almost agree because ... well, let's not open that whole can of worms again. I would say Talebones was one of the only semipro (ie low paying) print pubs that had any clout among the spec-lit crowd. The "spec-lit" pubs seem to be dying off while more commercial venues are *starting* up.

Coincedence?

When Leading Edge dies, then I'll really feel it. THey gave bbirth to a lot of authors that are very famous now. I don't know enough about talebones to say anything about it.

However, it does seem like the cost of printing a magazine may be too much for most establishments.

Well Talebones isn't dead yet . . .but I don't think I'll be renewing my subscription that lapsed last year. They seldom ran a story I really liked in the two (or was it three?) years I subscribed. Maybe six in twelve issues. I'll miss them a little, I guess, as I'd miss any market. I hope their fan base comes through and keeps them afloat, but I'm really not in it.

That was kind of Dave's whole point, I think.

Yeah, I know. They are good people at Talebones, too.
Look, hopefully we'll vote out a document for SASA soon and get that going, then we'll see if we can promote S&S to a new generation, maybe show a way other sub-genre pubs can use to liven up things a little.

You can add TB rejected everything G. W. Thomas ever sent them. I laughed with Patrick about this at V-Con last year. (I laughed. He looked at me like I was insane. Maybe his eye is sharper than you give him credit for?) Now that I am editing a magazine I understand better how this happens. You get lots of great material but it may not be what your magazine publishes. For example, my mag is RAGEmachine Magazine which has an 'action' orientation to it. It is basically 'modern Pulp' and I might receive the best talking heads Hugo-winnng story ever from (put name of BIG writer here.) I would probably reject it because it's slow and not an action story. C'est la vie. If my brain was working that day i might put in anyway and splash the name right across the cover. Editors are only human despite the rumors.
