I enjoy seeing movies in the theater, but I'm not the sort to rush right out opening week. Even if I do go soon after release, I go early on a Saturday or Sunday and still get to enjoy a less-than-full theater. STB has been out a while now, and the Saturday 10:30 am showing I attended ended up hosting 13 people, including myself. Nice.

But you probably couldn't care less about my theater going habits, so let's move on to my review: meh.

It was all right. Enjoyable in an extended television episode sort of way. It's a straight-through adventure ride without much pause for breath, with some decent humor tossed in for good measure. I liked how this film gave the secondary characters more screen time and opportunity to be involved in the story. But maybe the original series and the 80s movies with the original cast are too ingrained in my DNA for me to fully accept this new incarnation.

As the film opens, we find Kirk waffling about his commitment to the Federation (Kirk waffling on anything?). Seems captaining a starship isn't as much fun as he expected. Spock, too, is having his own crises, what with being one of the few remaining Vulcans after the destruction of his planet in the first film. But they'll have to put their plans on hold when an escape pod shows up while they're docked with the star base Yorktown. Kirk and the Enterprise soon find themselves headed into uncharted territory on a rescue mission, which, of course, turns out to be something much more.

Despite a host of supporting players, Star Trek's main characters have always been Kirk, Spock and Bones. While others have their roles, they'll regulated to supporting cast and getting only the occasional spotlight. In STB, it's nice to see some of them get a chance to do something that directly affects the action.

As I mentioned above, the story is a straight forward action tale. Lin, unlike Abrams -- who tends to open movies with phasers firing -- takes time to set things up, getting is settled into and invested in the story. Once we are, things take off with a series of battles both big and small, all of which were well done, despite the occasional overly convenient element that made me think "yeah, right, that would happen".

While Idris Elba can turn any role into a performance, he doesn't really have a lot to work with here. He wants to destroy the Federation and is willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen, but that's presented in a vacuum, and it's not until the final scenes of the film that we're able to understand is (in my view) rather thin motivations. And by then the movie's almost over. This made him feel hollow and flat.

It's worth mentioning hat the movie comes with some off screen news, the first being the death of Anton Yelchin who plays Chekov. I don't know much about him, but he made a good Chekov and had a much larger role in this film than in the previous two. Sad.

There was also some drama around the character of Sulu, who, in STB, is depicted as being gay and having a partner (and adopted child), ostensibly to honor the original Sulu, George Takei, who came out as a homosexual decades after the original series aired. Takei was quick to point out that while he might be gay, Sulu was not. And it's not as though that aspect of Sulu's character was given any exploration in the film anyway, making the whole thing feel like a cheap gimmick.

In the end, I found it to be flawed, but entertaining. Fun, although I suspect it's more fun for those who were introduced to Star Trek through the reboot and not those of us who spent an hour after school watching original series (or their reruns) on a 12 inch black and white.

    Author: SFReader
Subject: Suicide Squad
Posted: Aug-09-2016 at 1:01pm

Suicide Squad (2016), Rated "PG-13"
Starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Cara Delevingne

Directed by David Ayer

Review by Dave Felts

Rating 7/10

Suicide Squad is one of those movies that makes me wonder what critics are thinking when they go see it. I mean, it's a comic book movie. It's not American Beauty, Lost in Translation, or Citizen Kane, and I don't think it can be judged on the same standards. Suicide Squad can be good in a way that those other types of movies can't and vice versa. It's not going to make some great statement about the human condition, or love, or relationships, or any other sort of naval gazing philosophy. It exists for one purpose: to entertain. And for me, Suicide Squad succeeded.

That's not to say it didn't have problems. I thought the music was overdone. I though the Joker (after having most of his scenes cut) was superfluous to the film and came across more as a toothless psychotic than one of the greatest villains ever. Batman might as well have not been in there. The secondary characters (Captain Boomerang in particular) were under-developed. The Enchantress? What was that supposed to be? She looked as though she was having a seizure or twerking as she delivered her lines there at the end. Horribly done.

And yet....

I liked it. I'd see it again, which is something I can't say about X-Men Apocalypse and I enjoyed that too although not as much as Mike evidently did.

So what do we have? Basically a remake of the Dirty Dozen. A handful of ultimate super villains are coerced into saving the world, and maybe themselves in the process.

We've got Deadshot, a hit man for hire with a soft spot (Will Smith); Harley Quinn, the hot crazy chick (Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney); Croc, the human crocodile (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje); Colonel Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), a ninja (Karen Fukuhara) with a magic sword, Diablo, who can set things on fire with is mind (Jay Hernandez), the Enchantress, an ancient witch once worshiped as a god (Cara Delevingne), and overseeing them is Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) who is probably the scariest of them all.

Seems Superman has the world on edge with the realization that the next super powered human to come along might not be a boy scout. In order to be prepared for that contingency, Waller decides to put together a team of super baddies, using the threat of death to force work as a team to do her bidding. Thing is, if there was another Superman to come along, he'd blow through this team without breaking a sweat. Never mind that though. We've always got Batman, right?

Oh yeah, the Joker. He was in it. I think. He probably had more screen time in the trailers than in the actual movie, and that was a big disappointment. He wasn't a part of the plot, or any sub-plot, or any sub-sub-plot... actually, I don't really know why he was there. And scary? Leto's Joker was boring. He looked and acted like a teenage fan boy on his way to a Comic-Con cosplay party. Someone you'd cross the street to get way from, but one of the most sinister and powerful villains ever? Hardly.

A bright spot was Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. Fun to watch, I felt she really brought the essence of the character off the pages and out of animation onto the big screen. Kudos. The rest of the villains were adequate to the task, and I liked Deadshot's sardonic wit, although many I know didn't.

Should you see it? I dunno. I liked it. Some people I know who are just as geeky as I am liked it too, but others thought it was awful. Critics seem to hate it, but audience reviews seem to be split. Most viewers either liked it, or didn't, without too many being in the middle.

If you're a Harley Quinn fan, I think you have to go. If you're DC fan, it's probably another must-see, although half of you need to be prepared to be disappointed. Just remember - it's comic book-based entertainment, and not intended to be an Oscar best-picture nominee.

He and Sara (Jessica Chastain) distinguished themselves as the army's best fighters, but ultimately drew the ire of the queen when they fell in love. Freya has a pretty hardcore derision of love, and uses her magic to to destroy their relationship and pit the two of them against each other.

Eric escapes the Queen Freya's kingdom, and that's the end of the prequel part.

The next time we see him, he's already been through his Snow White adventure and has been charged by Snow White with the quest of recovering the magic mirror used by Raveena, Frey's sister. In this journey, accompanied by two dwarves (Nick Frost and Rob Brydon) he encounters Sara. Despite the history between them, they manage to put aside their differences and join forces to go after the mirror, ostensibly to get it and keep it from bestowing power on and corrupting anyone else.

As I watched it, I was wondering, why is Chris Hemsworth in this? Jessica Chastain? Emily Blunt? Charlize Theron? At the moment, these are all A-list stars, and this certainly isn't an A-list movie. All I can think is that there must have been some sort of studio contract or some such that they couldn't get out of. Not that the movie was bad, per-se, but it certainly wasn't a showcase worthy of the star power the occupied the screen.

This is Cedric Nicolas-Troyan's first feature film. He has a visual effects background, and it shows. The visuals are well done and the world and settings well realized. They are the best part of the movie. But it's not enough to drive the story forward and make up for the lackluster and predictable script and uninspired acting.

Like most quest movies (Lord of the Rings anyone?) there's plenty of walking and talking and random monster encounters. Walking and talking is fine when the characters are interesting enough to hold your attention, which, for me, wasn't the case in The Huntsman: Winter's War.

As the end credits rolled, I was left let down. Part of the title is, after all, winter's war. But where was the war? Winter's Battle might have been better. Or Mirror Quest and Sisters Arguing. And the whole animosity Queen Freya holds against love felt ill-motivated and inauthentic.

In the end I think the best two words to sum up the whole thing would be wasted talent.

That's not to say it's unwatchable, although it not worth going out of your way for. When (or if) it shows up on Netflix and Amazon Prime, it's worth a watch for the eye candy it offers, but not much else.

Blakeson

Review by Dave Felts

Rating 3/10

I haven't read the book (or is it books?) so my only exposure to this reality is through the movie. What we've got here is your pretty typical alien invasion end-of-the-world story, dumbed down to appeal to a younger crowd, primarily by making (as per usual) adult ineffective and children heroes. Nothing wrong with that fantasy, but like any fantasy it needs to be executed in a way that makes it believable, and that's the problem I had with The Fifth Wave.

Here's the thing the creators of young heroes need to consider: Until late adolescence, most young people will not be as strong as an adult. They won't have the experience of an adult. They won't have the judgement of an adult. They won't have the training of an adult. They would generally be a bad investment when it comes to using them for any sort of "military" action. And that's one of the issues I hear, when the youngun's (down to 10 at least, maybe even younger) got all trained up and sent out on a mission. Dumb. The only mission I would send a bunch of kids off on would be 1) one I didn't want to be successful or 2) a suicide mission.

As I mentioned, I had not read the book, so I had no expectations going in. The 5th Wave is about aliens invading Earth. Stupid aliens who have the technology to destroy our power grid, custom-tailored a plague virus, cause earthquakes and other disaster, but evidently aren't able to kill humans very well, or even locate them for that matter. Ever hear of infra-red?

The main character is a teen-aged girl named Cassie Sullivan (Chloe Grace Moretz). When the aliens appear and start attacking, she narrates the first three waves of attack as a way to move the plot forward. The first wave is a global electromagnetic pulse that wipes out all electronics and electricity. Makes the aliens look as though they know what they are up to.

The second wave comes as earthquakes, causing tsunamis and flooding, beginning the destruction of the human species. Another smart move, and one that also implies impressive technology.

The third wave is a biological attack. They alter the bird flu to be deadly. The 300 billion birds spread it and most of the population contracts it an dies. We aren't told exactly how many are left, but some people are immune. Still, not too bad an idea, and one that has the advantage of killing humans without causing damage to the earth, which (I'm supposing) is what the aliens want.

So now most of the humans are dead and all that's left is the clean up, and here's where things get a bit... dumb. Seems the aliens have been planning this for some time and have embedded sleeper agents that are a combination of human and alien DNA. They have been activated and are now running around killing the remaining humans. OK, seems a bit complicated, but whatever. I mean, you're aliens who can cross the inconceivable gulf of space, can't you make some drones or robots or something to hunt humans down? Heck, we can do that now!

Anyway, Cassie, her father (Ron Livingstone), and her brother Sammy (Zackary Arthur) join up with some refugees at a camp. That lasts about a day before the military shows up, led by Colonel Vosch (Liev Schreiber). They are there to help of course, and the first thing to do is save the children. They hustle all the kids onto buses, leaving the adults (and, inadvertently, Cassie) behind. Now we get the revelation of the fourth wave: aliens can possess humans and any human could be an alien in disguise.

The kids arrive at some base and are informed that the fifth wave has begun, that being an invasion by the aliens using humans as hosts. The military has developed way to detect humans hosting aliens and the kids are going to be trained as soldier to fight a war against them.

Please.

That's the best plan the aliens can come up with? How did they ever make it into space? Add in a standard-issue romance and rescue mission and you've got just about every bad trope a young adult story can have.

If you're older than 12, avoid this, unless stupid movies with dumb aliens, a predictable plot, and stereotypical characters is your thing.

Griffiths
Rating 4/10

I had not really planned to see this movie. It was one of those moments where I was near the theater and had some free time, so I walked in with the hopes there would be something I would be willing to spend money to see. A few nights before, I'd had a few beers with a young couple who'd talked it up, so I figured I'd give it a chance.

Like most comic fans, I found the idea of Batman having any chance of taking on Superman unlikely at best, but figured they would make it work somehow. At once I saw that the movie focused more on Batman, it was a plus for me. It was also dark and gloomy -- also a plus.

The general outline of the plot is the heroes each begin to suspect the other of committing foul deeds. This slowly builds to the point where they feel the obligation to take out this threat to the rest of humanity, which in this case are each other. Unfortunately, while both these heroes were wasting time focusing on the other, Lex Luther was creating a situation that could end up destroying most of the Earth.

Lex Luther played a huge role, almost having more screen time than Superman. Ms. Lane and Alfred were there as well. The acting moved me. I am not the biggest fan of Den Affleck, but he puts his all into this one and I could tell he really tried to take it up a notch. The writing worked. if you can wrap your head around the plot and just let yourself enjoy it, the movie will take you for a wild ride. The visuals rocked and without ruining the climax, I have to say it ripped pretty damn hard.

Downsides with this might just be the idea itself. They had to try pretty hard to give Batman a reason to want to take Superman out, even though Lex worked behind the scenes to spur him on. Sure it was an underdog worried about Superman being an unstoppable dictator-style leader. I can appreciate this, but still, it was a little thin. And the whole Wonder Woman thing felt a bit tacked on.

Also I'm getting a little sick or all the heroes and villains looking like they just graduated high school. I know the X-men are supposed to be young so sometimes they can get away with it, but Lex should look older than my daughter. I feel like I could take him out with a punch, and that doesn't make him too scary.

If you like DC comics, Superman, or Batman, you should see this one. Action fans should also not pass this one up. There are a few fun surprises that I won't ruin for you. You'll know what I am talking about when you see it.

You might have reservations, but consider giving it a chance. I doubt you will feel let down.

Edited by SFReader - Jul-15-2016 at 1:17pm

He was in the first four issues back in, what, the sixties? Let it go people.

Secondly, yes, Thor is a member of the Avengers so I can deal with it, but he was not there more often than he was. The Avengers were often struggling against the craziest of villains with just a handful of heroes, none of which was more powerful than Cap.

So let's start with some good things. Who is more upstanding than the Captain? He's the all-American guy. So what does this movie do? Makes him into all but a criminal because he decides to pursue what he thinks is right at all costs. Hat off for going there. In this era where standing up for what you believe in could get you jailed and bucking the system (pun intended) will get you fined, beat up, and tossed in prison, to have a guy who’s name is Captain America taking the anarchy road, well that’s just flipping awesome.

So Cap represents the guy not sacrificing his morals and risking it all to do what he knows is right and Iron Man is the mega-rich billionaire sucking up to the government and the interests of the corporations who back the establishment and status quo. Frankly, I'm amazed the corps allowed a mainstream movie to come out like this. Although they probably assume that most Americas won't get it or care even if they do. Still, they took a risk and I commend them. That is what good writing is all about.

It was exciting to see Black Panther, which again made it seem more like an Avenger's film. Funny how they all have bullet proof armor these days, which makes sense because it would be a shame for one loser with a lucky shot to take one of these men out. Still, I remember reading a Black Panther comics when I was in second grade and seeing his costume torn and going through agony because he was lashed to a cactus.

I didn't mention it before, but Scarlet Witch is fantastic. I always loved her character. It's so nice to see her and Vision in these movies instead of the Hulk.

Either you like these movies or you don't. I'll be grading this as a super hero movie and as such it was superb. It would have gotten five stars save for one issue.... I am sure you saw the ads so it will not ruin it to address the battle between the heroes. For some reason the Vision was present, but was not in any of the fight scenes. I guess I know why, because his side would have won in about a minute if he'd been involved. Nevertheless, it would have been better to figure out a reason he couldn't be there, instead of him off having a smoke or something.

The first X-men was pretty good and I loved the scene in the first Spiderman movie where the New Yorkers threw lunch boxes at the Green Goblin, but overall, this movie is my favorite so far.

    Author: SFReader
Subject: The Darkness
Posted: Jul-11-2016 at 12:22pm

The Darkness (2016), Rated "PG-13"
Starring Kevin Bacon, Radha Mitchell, David Mazouz
Directed by Greg Mclean
Review by Michael D. Griffiths
Rating 7/10

I going on with my trend of trying to see every movie in the theater that could even be close to a film I might like. Let me add something a little more personal too, if I may. I am also bouncing out of a caustic and long relationship, where my S.O. slowly banned the watching of horror movies first at the cinema and then at home. So I took great pleasure in seeing my first horror movie since the breakup. I was really hoping I would not be let down. I almost felt like a virgin on a first date.

The Darkness delivered. I like Kevin Bacon, even if seeing him look so old made me feel old. Also some serious props for Radha Mitchell for being in another horror movie. I respect her scream queen action. She will be permanently leaving her mark on post 2000 horror. She is beyond awesome in my eyes.

As the movie starts, we see hints that this nuclear family has experienced some troubles. The issues range from the mother’s alcoholism to an autistic son. The kids wonder off and the son discovered ancient Anasazi artifacts. Five items of evil which will draw fire powerful demon spirits into this challenged home.

The boy begins to summon these beings and this family is drawn in greater danger. Stress builds as the boy lights his room on fire. The ugly scar he leaves becomes a gateway in which the demons seek to enter our world.

The movie gives us some scary tense moments and lets some serious horror fill the screen. Takes a lot to scare this author, but I appreciate their effort. The Darkness is a worthy horror movie and since how bad most of what comes out these days is, they deserve extra credit for bringing things up a notch.

But there were a few issues. First scene they are supposed to be near the Grand Canyon, but nope they are in Utah. Please people, some folks actually live in the southwest and others travel. Do not assume that several million people can be fed a line of bull. Also, and if you have not seen the movie, you will not believe me, the boy walks about a hundred feet from park picnic tables and falls into an ancient ruin. Look I wish Arizona was like that, oh how I wish, but nope. Lastly, the transparent analogy of the demons representing family problems remained obvious.

If you like horror movies, The Darkness makes it happen. It would be a worthy addition to a collection. I am glad to see Hollywood giving the genre the power to hire real actors. I will probably buy this once the price drops and add it to my collection of movies.

Griffiths
Rating 5/5

Okay, for the few of you who might have read my recent review of Captain America:Civil War where I said that was my favorite Marvel movie, well it was two weeksago. But then this movie came out. I am not being fickle, X-Men: Age ofApocalypse is epic.

Firstoff, Apocalypse is just an eerie guy. I also like villains that are almostinvincible. Something about fighting that kind of being does it for me. Ienjoyed Eric/Magneto’s back story. His darkness is growing, but he has notgiven in completely.

Thetale begins when Apocalypse is uncovered and quickly begins his control overthe world by creating four riders of the apocalypse to aid him. When he kidnapsCharles, the heroes know they need to fight a would be god and his fourhenchmen if they are going to have any chance to save the world.

Thefight climaxing the movie is all out action that goes a good twenty minutes.Quite the battle. Quicksilver is not only awesome, but also mighty. This youngversion became a great addition to the movie. Nightcrawler too. Nice to seemore of the other X-Men in this flick as well.

Notmany downsides here. If sweeping, world in jeopardy, stories are something youenjoy, than this movie rights its own ticket. There were some complaints aboutMystique being strangled by Apocalypse in an advertisement.

A) Apocalypse wasevil, so the message to me would be, do not be an evil bastard like this guy.

B) Sorry, Mystique is a powerful woman and power women takes risks to fight forwhat they believe in.

I could go on, but I think we need to grasp the widerconcept, which is people have a certain desire for action and its presence willnot be disappearing any time soon.

Thismovie packs a punch. I loved it. If you like the hero action, you cannot passthis up. Amazing to have two top classMarvel movies come out back to back. This one edges past Captain America. Icould happily watch this one more than once over the upcoming years. I willprobably buy this one down the line. Yeah, I still buy movies!

X-Men Apocalypse at Amazon

Edited by SFReader - Jul-08-2016 at 9:09am

Chu
Review by Michael D. Griffiths
Rating 4/5

I managed to view Now You See Me 2 with my dad on Father’s Day. So after a full meal, we headed to Harkins and even ran into a former co-worker there and we all sat together. So Unlike 75% of the last movies I saw, I was not by myself.

This movie hit it hard with the mind twisting magic arts, hidden plots, conspiracies, and people switching sides. It was sort of like an action adventure for the Illuminati. The characters are fun and likable and Woody steals the show, in my opinion. He had me laughing every few minutes. Harrelson has some profound comedic skills. I do not think he took this movie to seriously and this allowed him to relax and just play up some scenes, which turned out funnier than anything I’ve seen in a while.

The plot bends and turns. The Horsemen are a secret group of magicians who expose cooperate crimes, more for the fun of tearing them down, than any sense of them moving toward the greater good. But they are backed by a group called The Eye, which could have a higher purpose.

The team is crossed and has some dirty tricks played on them. Blackmail and threats force them into another mission, but for the sake of evil this time. Can the team out trick their enemies when they are being faced with foes from multiple fronts?

Loads of action here. Fun tricks and a little fighting, but compared to most action movies almost none. Nice to see it is possible to have an action movie without a lot of violence.

Possible downsides of this one might be that the few fight scenes were a little choppy. Some tricks happened a little quickly too and it might have been nice to understand it better. Still this was a fast paced adventure and did not really need to be slowed. It would not have sat well with the general theme.

So if you like a more light hearted action flick, this could be for you. Compared say to any hero movie, this is far less violent, so you might be able to take younger kids to this one. There is good humor here, fun magic effects, loads of intrigue, and action. This could be a good family movie for the parents to see with middle school and high school kids. Heck, I saw with my dad, why not.

Jackson, Margot Robbie

Directed by David Yates

Reviewed by Dave Felts

Rating: (3.5/5)

I'm not exactly sure when I was bitten by the speculative fiction bug. I think I was around 12 or 13 when I saw my first Conan book, courtesy of the guy running the local planetarium (on a class field trip). He let me borrow them, and I was hooked. Edgar Rice Burroughs followed. I confess to not reading all the Tarzan books (what are there, 23?), but I devoured his Mars and Pellucidar series more than once. Tarzan at the Earth's Core was one of my favorites. I've re-read it a couple of times, although not recently.

I also have fond recollections of Saturday mornings spent in front of the TV during Tarzan Theater watching Johnny Weissmuller swing through the trees, accompanied by Boy, Jane, Cheetah, and Tontu.

The first theatrical Tarzan I recall is the Tarzan the Ape Man, a 1981 fiasco starring Miles O'Keefe and Bo Derreck, which my friends and I saw in the theater. Greystoke came out a few years later -- I thought that one a much better film. I tried to watch Tarzan and the Lost City. That I don't even remember how far I got into it before stopping, and I imagine that tells you what I thought of it.

In a way, I think Tarzan can be considered the first modern superhero. Sure, we've got Beowulf and Hercules and a few others from long ago. The books are dated, and there's no mistaking the casual racism, but movie Tarzan has continued to stay without us even as the decades have passed, showing up in an updated version now and again, keeping pace with the times.

And now we have The Legend of Tarzan, the latest incarnation of the Ape Man. The Legend of Tarzan remains true to a good portion of the source material, but also changes several (inconsequential) things. As in the books, Tarzan (Alexander Scarsgard) is raised by apes in the wilds of Africa after his mother dies and his father is killed. This origin is sketched out in flashbacks, but this isn't an origin film. The Tarzan we have here is middle-aged, having been out of the Jungle for some years and residing in London as Lord Greystoke, alongside his wife Jane (Margot Robbie).

He's lured back to Africa by George Washington Williams (Samuel L. Jackson), who tells seeks help to resolve the slavery of the Congolese. Once in Africa, Tarzan falls into a plot masterminded by corrupt a Belgian named Captain Léon Rom (Christoph Waltz), who has promised to deliver Tarzan to and old enemy in exchange for diamonds he plans on delivering to his king, said diamonds intended to finance an army the king plans on using to subjugate the entire region. To that end, he plans on capturing Tarzan for delivery, and when that fails, he settles instead for kidnapping Jane, figuring Tarzan won't be far behind.

So… is it any good? All I can say is that I enjoyed it, but don't look for it to be on any award nomination lists. I did have a few issues. The first is the story, which turns out to be a by-the-number rescue. Jane gets kidnapped, Tarzan goes after her, steamrolling over everything in his way. Which brings up another thing that fell flat and that's the character of Jane. Other than being there for Tarzan to save, she didn't have much purpose and wasn't much of a character.

Where the movie worked great for me was Skarsgard as Tarzan. I thought he was the best Tarzan I've seen; lean but muscular, sardonic and steady, unrelenting and unflappable. I think he's the best embodiment of the Ape Man to hit the screen. Kudos for that.

If you're a Tarzan fan, you have to see it, that goes without saying. I'm not sure this movie will spawn any new converts, however. Those who don't have a history with the Ape Man will enjoy a fairly typical rescue the maiden film a la Taken, where an unstoppable force runs into (and over and through) people trying to stop him.
